I am a procrastinator; plain and simple. So perhaps it is appropriate that the first time I knew that I wanted to write was when, instead of studying for a Biology exam I sat down to write about my experiences in college. While I nearly failed the exam, I realized then that writing was what I wanted to do. True to my procrastinating form, I came upon the Facebook post for The Missing Slate while surfing the Internet, when I really should have been writing my thesis. I sent in an application thinking there was no chance I would get a reply let alone the job, but it happened. And since then I can confidently say that The Missing Slate has made my life better.
As a shy introvert who is apprehensive about everything new and unfamiliar, The Missing Slate pushes me to experience things I would never experience on my own. Being a part of something as cosmopolitan and as meaningful as The Missing Slate, has also lent me confidence and a sense of purpose. And while being in the company of such talented and brilliant artists is extremely daunting, it is also a constant source of inspiration and motivation.
Despite the fact that I haven’t been with The Missing Slate for as long as some of the magazine’s more seasoned team members, I already feel a strong affiliation with the magazine and its content. Its inclusivity, patronage for up and coming artists and emphasis on certain core values like freedom of speech, are what make the The Missing Slate experience special for me. And what’s more, every time The Missing Slate crosses a milestone on its journey to global recognition I beam proudly knowing that I had a part (albeit tiny) to play in this journey.
