New Voices Writing Competition

New Voices

This April, The Missing Slate is proud to announce its first paid writing competition. We are looking for work that is original, thoughtful, well-articulated and creative, with characters we can care about. Entries must be no longer than 10,000 words, be previously unpublished, and not be selected as a winner, finalist or honorable mention in another competition. These can include novel excerpts. You can submit from anywhere in the world – anything that expands our world view is welcomed.

Following on from the success of our Hallowe’en Writing Contest, we felt a wider competition targeting new voices, irrespective of geography was imminent. We are also charging a small $10 submissions fee, making this the first time we’re charging for anything. An important aspect of the prize is the cash prize is directly proportional to the number of submissions (with a guaranteed $150 $300 prize and increasing), so we’re essentially splitting our earnings.

Prize:

  • $150 $300 guaranteed cash prize; the higher the number of entries, the higher the cash prize.
  • The winner will be published in our print anthology (mailed as a complimentary issue).
  • The three runners up will be presented with our merchandise (a canvas bag of your choice and postcard packs), and be published in our print anthology.
  • All entries will be considered for Story of the Week.

Guidelines:

  • Please be sure to include your contact information (email address, mailing address, and contact number).
  • Please ensure your piece is original i.e. not previously published (or a winner, finalist or honorable mention for another competition). This will be carefully checked, so please ensure that this prerequisite is met.
  • Label the attached Microsoft Word file as “Your Name – TMS Writing Competition 2014”.
  • We publish in Georgia 11pt, justified, no indentations with 1.5″-2.0″ line spacing, and it would be helpful if you could format your submission the same way.
  • You should include a third-person bio of around 50 words.
  • Pay the $10 submissions fee.

Deadline: July 1, 2014 (midnight GMT)

Judging:

  • The writing competition will be judged by the senior editors of the magazine.
  • The winner and runners-up will be announced by August 1, 2014.
  • All writers who enter will be notified of the judges’ decisions – all decisions are final.
